Bad Girls

Bad Girls is a very popular prison drama that initially aired in the UK in 1999. It was extremely popular in the UK and ran for eight series in total. It differed from the standard prison drama format insofar as it focuses on a activities at a women’s prison in Oxford. Unusually for a British prison drama Bad Girls has had quite a significant level of success in other countries and it was exported across world and translated into several different languages. All eight series of the Bad Girls prison drama were made available after their initial run on television and they sold well in several countries. The popularity of this prison drama in the US, where it enjoyed considerable DVD sales for a relatively obscure British TV show, was very high. It was popular enough for a US television network to decide to create their own version of it and a similar US women’s prison drama is now currently in production. The popularity of the women’s prison drama Bad Girls in the UK was enough to prompt a west end version of the show. However the west end production was not a prison drama, but rather a musical comedy. Unfortunately the West End production only ran for two months despite a positive critical response. Bad Girls the musical is due for a DVD release later this year, although fans of the women’s prison drama bad girls might not enjoy its light hearted tone.
