Guiding Light
Guiding Light is an American television program credited by the Guinness Book of World Records as being the longest-running soap opera in production and the longest running drama in television and radio history. One of the main characters are Olivia Spencer and Natalia Rivera Aitoro whose relationship started to develop following Olivia's heart transplant in April 2008. Since then, the couple's relationship has changed from being enemies to close friends who rely on each other to becoming more than friends. Despite the couple not yet having made their romantic relationship physical, they have generated much interest not only amongst Guiding Light viewers but also amongst soap opera critics and LGBT oriented websites. Olivia and Natalia are currently the most praised same-sex couple in American daytime drama. Nelson Branco of the Internet website TV Guide Canada names Olivia and Natalia as 2009's "Sexiest Couple Alive" and writes, "In an age of contrived and soulless couples, Olivia and Natalia’s burgeoning romance felt natural, innocent, and most importantly, real." Branco calls Olivia and Natalia a "fledgling super - couple". However, despite widely-noticed success of "Otalia", it was not enough to prevent CBS from announcing on April 1 that the 72 year-old production of Guiding Light would cease broadcast on the network after September 18, 2009 leaving Otalia's long-term prospects in doubt.
