Out of Practice
Out of Practice is a comedy about a family of physicians who share the same profession but have little else in common. Ben Barnes (Christopher Gorham) is an earnest young couples' counsellor whose family doesn't consider him to be a "real" doctor because he doesn't have "M.D." after his name. They're the real doctors: Ben's brother, Oliver (Ty Burrell) is good-looking, self-cantered, and a plastic surgeon who enjoys dating the prettiest women in town, some of whom he helped make that way; and his sister Regina (Paula Marshall) is an E.R.
Within the first ten minutes of the pilot, the siblings are discussing dating and significant others, and Regina's status as a lesbian is bantered about and her family members are clearly accepting it enough to mention her sexual orientation in good-natured teasing. The also take it as a matter of fact, as one of many enduring, and even endearing, aspects of her personality.
Their divorcing parents are Stewart (Henry Winkler) , a gastroenterologist who is glad to be free from the reins of his controlling wife, and (LydiaChanning)
a driven, status conscious cardiologist whose career eclipsed her ex's years ago. Stewart is also dating Crystal (Jennifer Tilly), his assistant, who just happens to be a patient of Oliver's. But despite their lofty credentials, Ben might be the best prescription for the future of this family.
